One-Sentence Definition
Network hashrate is the total combined computing power of all miners currently working to secure a blockchain, measured in hash rate units like TH/s (terahashes per second) or EH/s (exahashes per second).
Why It Matters for Solo Mining
Network hashrate directly determines your odds of finding a block when solo mining—the higher the network hashrate, the lower your chances become. If Bitcoin’s network hashrate is 600 EH/s and you’re running a Bitaxe Gamma 602 at 1.2 TH/s, you’re competing against an absolutely massive amount of computing power. Understanding network hashrate helps you set realistic expectations and calculate your actual probability of winning a block reward.
How It Works
Every miner on the network is constantly generating hashes—essentially making guesses to solve the cryptographic puzzle that creates a new block. The network hashrate is the sum of all these guesses happening per second across the entire network. Bitcoin nodes estimate this number by looking at how quickly blocks are being found compared to the target block time (10 minutes for Bitcoin). If blocks are coming faster than expected, the network hashrate has probably increased; if they’re slower, it’s likely decreased.
Network hashrate fluctuates constantly as miners turn equipment on or off, as electricity costs change, or after events like a halving that affects mining profitability. Mining difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks (about two weeks for Bitcoin) to compensate for these changes and keep block times steady. When you’re using tools like CKPool or P2Pool, they track the current network hashrate to help calculate your odds.
Example
Let’s say Bitcoin’s network hashrate is 700 EH/s (700,000,000 TH/s). If you’re running a Lucky Miner LV08 at 800 GH/s (0.8 TH/s), your hashrate represents 0.8 ÷ 700,000,000 = 0.00000000114% of the total network. That means on average, you’d find one block every 0.00000000114% of all blocks—which works out to about one block every 24,500 years. Pretty wild odds, but hey, someone with a Bitaxe actually won $200K, so it’s technically possible!
